Rochester Clinical Research [RCR] is a dedicated clinical research center providing clinical research services to the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. RCR was founded in 1994 by Patricia Larrabee, RNNP. Dr. Matthew Davis is our full-time medical director; Dr. Tammi Shlotzhauer and Dr. Keith Pryhuber are our associate medical directors. Dr. Mervyn Weerasinghe is a consultant to RCR.

Rochester Clinical Research is a WBENC-Certified Women's Business Enterprise. RCR is a WBENC-Certified Women's Business Enterprise. WBENC Certification validates that the business is 51 percent owned, controlled, operated, and managed by a woman or women. To achieve WBENC Certification, women-owned businesses complete a formal documentation and site visit process, which is administered by one of WBENC's 14 Regional Partner Organizations.

Conveniently located near the intersection of Route 590 and Empire Boulevard in the northeast quadrant of Rochester NY, Rochester Clinical Research has a staff of 30 employees, including 2 nurse practitioners, 10 nurses, and a registered dietitian. We also have 4 physician consultants. Our spacious 9,600 square foot office is decorated with beautiful quilts made by several of our staff members.

The majority of our studies are Phase III clinical trials with medications that have already undergone testing in humans and are in the last stages of study prior to FDA consideration for approval. Volunteers in our studies receive free medical care and medicines and a monetary stipend to compensate for their time and travel. Our trials range from six weeks in duration to as long as several years.

We perform a wide range of clinical trials, and our current studies list indicates studies for which we are recruiting volunteers. We maintain close working relationships with our volunteers’ primary care providers by sending regular updates, letters, and lab results.

Most of our studies are “placebo controlled,” meaning some patients will receive a placebo rather than the study medication. Most of our studies are also “double-blind,” meaning neither we nor the volunteer know whether they are receiving study medication or placebo. After the completion of the study and after we are notified by the study sponsor, we send patients a letter informing them whether they received the study medication or placebo.

Why participate in clinical research studies? Most of our volunteers are motivated by altruism, a desire to help others that have their disease. Others are hoping to receive a new and more effective treatment than what is currently available. Most of our patients value the extra time our medical staff and dietician spend with them providing medical care and education about their condition. Our volunteers appreciate the efficiency and short waiting times in our office, so much so that our patients have given us a 97% approval rating.
